The misuse of false or stolen identities underpins terrorist and criminal activity and undermines border and citizenship controls, as well as efforts to combat terrorist financing and financial crime. It is currently estimated that identity crime costs Australia more than $1 billion annually. Having your identity stolen can be devastating both financially and emotionally. Re-establishing relationships of trust with banks, government authorities, businesses, and throughout the community is costly, time consuming and emotionally trying. Victims of identity theft can often spend years and thousands of dollars trying to restore their good names and credit ratings. Strengthening Australias identity security processes is vital to protecting Australian citizens against the theft or misuse of their identities. And you can help. By introducing some practical precautions into your everyday life, you can take an active role in reducing the risk that your identity may be stolen. 1-2-3 Steps for Protecting Consumers Identity The following are the 1-2-3 steps to advise consumers on how to protect themselves from identity theft: 1. Never give out personal information to someone you dont know or trust. 2. Dont just bin it - destroy old bills, records, or expired cards. 3. Check your credit report at least once a year. Further prevention strategies are contained in the Australian Governments National Identity theft prevention and response kit. Copies of the kit can be ordered by calling (02) 6250 6711 or viewed online at www.crimeprevention.gov.au under information resources. What are Australian Governments doing to prevent identity crime? On 14 April 2005, the Australian Government announced the development of the National Identity Security Strategy (NISS). This strategy was endorsed by COAG on 27 September 2005 as a key whole-of-government initiative. The NISS aims to strengthen identity security through rigorous enrolment and authentication processes while ensuring personal privacy. The national strategy is based on a cross-jurisdictional, whole-of-government approach to maximise its effectiveness and interoperability across all governments. The key objectives of the strategy include: improved standards and procedures for enrolment and registration including identifying key Proof of Identity (POI) documents to be used by all appropriate organisations for the purposes of identifying and registering clients for services; enhancing the security features on these documents to reduce the risk of incidence of forgery; establishing mechanisms to enable organisations to verify the data on key POI documents provided by clients when registering for services; improving the accuracy of personal identity information held on organisations databases; enabling greater confidence in the authentication of individuals using online services; and providing appropriate legislative support. Further information on identity crime and the NISS can be found at www.crimeprevention.gov.au under identity crime.
