It is now possible to do things that were unheard of only a few years ago. Unfortunately, the Internet is not free from scams and scammers. Some scams are specially designed to take advantage of the way the Internet works. A lot of Internet scams take place without the victim even noticing. It is only when the person checks their banking or financial information that they realise they have been scammed. When using your computer on the Internet, however, you can take a number of simple precautions to protect yourself from Internet scams. 1. - Keep your protection software up-to-date  HYPERLINK "http://www.staysmartonline.gov.au/e-security_update_service" Use computer protection software, including anti-virus software, to prevent viruses and other malware (malicious software) from exposing you to scams and damaging your computer. Viruses and other malware are computer programs that alter the way a computer operates, often with undesirable consequences. This can be a major problem when your computer is connected to the Internet, as personal and sensitive information may be sent from your computer without you knowing. Malware can be installed on your computer in many ways, particularly through: opening an email attachment; downloading infected programs from websites; file sharing with other Internet users (peer-to-peer sharing); or accessing an infected USB memory stick, floppy disk or CD. The potential uses of malware are varied, depending on the type of malware installed on your computer. For example, malware can be used to log your keystrokes to record your personal information, such as banking account data, credit card details and passwords used to access financial accounts. It could also make your computer a zombie, allowing it to be controlled remotely to send spam and undertake other malicious activities on the Internet. Apart from exposing you to scams, malware can cause many problems on your computer, such as the deletion or corruption of files. The consequence may be diminished performance, problems with software or in some cases the complete malfunction of your computer. An increasingly important computer protection tool is a firewall, which helps prevent unauthorised access to and communications from your computer. Your computer operating software may already have a firewall, which should be turned on. You should: use anti-virus and other security software, and ensure this is updated regularlyideally through anauto-updatefunction if this option is provided; regularly download and install the latest security patches for all your computer software, including web browser applications; use personal firewall software; and only open an attachment to an email where the sender and the contents of the attachment are known by the email recipient. Suspect emails should be deleted immediately. Anti-virus, anti-malware and personal firewall software is available from your ISP or from computer shops, and more information about acquiring and using this software can be found on the Internet Industry Association web site:  HYPERLINK "http://www.security.iia.net.au/" www.security.iia.net.au. 2. - Dont respond in any way to unsolicited emails Think before you clickdon't click on links in suspicious emails. Be sceptical of offers that are too good to be truethey usually are! Be very suspicious of emails from an unknown origin, especially ones that promise you money, good health or a solution to all your problems. Opening spam messages may lead to malware being secretly installed on your computer. Never respond to suspicious emails. Responding to scam emails also confirms your address to the spammer. Be as wary of unsolicited emails as you would be about a telephone call or letter from an unknown source that made unusual promises or asked you for personal or financial details. Be wary of unexpected pop-up boxes that appear on your computer screen when browsing the Internet. Clicking the link in the box may install malicious software on your computer in the same way as clicking on the link in a suspicious email. Don't disclose personal information. Never respond to an email requesting confidential banking details such as your PIN or Internet banking password. Banks will never send you an email asking for personal security details like your Internet banking password or PIN. 3. - If in doubt, delete If you receive an email that seems dubiousfor example, the subject line looks suspicious or you dont recognise the senderit is safest to delete it immediately without opening it. Do not reply, and do not click on any links. Never buy spamadvertised products or servicesmany are fraudulent, and buying them only encourages more spam. Do not open suspicious or unsolicited emails (spam): delete them. Do not click on any links in a spam email, or open any files attached to them. Never call a telephone number that you see in a spam email. NEVER reply to a suspicious email (even to unsubscribe). Delete suspicious emails and exit from websites that: Ask you to provide your banking details or similar requests for personal information; or Promise you money; or Present hard luck or exotic stories telling you that you can share in hidden millions of dollars; or Offer you a job where you need no qualifications, but just ask for a bank account for money transfer. Scams Target You With all the different layers of protection available, you might hope to create a virtually bulletproof inbox but, unfortunately, that is unlikely. Even with the best precautions, you need to be vigilant and treat suspicious emails and Internet communications with caution. So remember Keep your protection software up-to-date; Dont respond in any way to unsolicited emails; and If in doubt, delete _________________________________________ Background to the Australasian Consumer Fraud Taskforce Consumer scams are crimes of dishonesty such as forgery, counterfeiting, on-line deception, and theft that are targeted at people who seek to purchase goods and services. Potential victims can be those who use fixed line or mobile phones, computers and the Internet, older people, and those who use professional advisers. As part of a whole of Government approach to combat consumer fraud and scams targeted at consumers, the Australasian Consumer Fraud Taskforce was established in March 2005 and comprises governmental regulatory agencies and departments in Australia and New Zealand with a role in consumer protection. The four-week campaign, from March 5 31, is designed by the Australasian Consumer Fraud Taskforce to help people protect themselves from scams.
