Media Release: Code of Practice Will Stall Net in Australia Says ISOC-AU

Melbourne, 11 March 1999: The peak Internet body in Australia, the Internet Society of Australia (ISOC-AU) today expressed concern at a proposed Internet industry Code of Practice. ISOC-AU believes that a total redraft of the provisions relating to censorship and user privacy is required. ISOC-AU is the Australian arm of the global Internet Society.

ISOC-AU is supporting the Electronic Frontiers Australia's detailed critique of a Code of Practice from the Internet Industry Association. ISOC-AU has offered Internet Service Providers an alternative forum to prepare a code, if the current draft is not changed.

ISOC-AU supports EFA's proposal that within the Codes of Practice a clear distinction be made between Internet Access Providers and commercial content providers, to avoid unnecessary confusion.

Antony Healey, ISOC-AU Director, said:

"The proposed Code demands that web-page developers censor, label, or password-protect any content, which will limit grass-roots development of web material and affect individual community web pages, as well as those of small Australian businesses."

"There must be greater public discussion and wide support of a Code before it could be considered a standard. It is important the Code provides a solid foundation and receive governments support, to further this vital new industry."
