The Federal Government is a leading user of information and communication technologies. The Coalition Government currently provides a vast range of public information online.
The Government recently launched eight customer-focused portals to provide a single customer-centric access points; Families, Education, Business, Workplace, Science and Industry, Culture and Recreation, Youth, and Agriculture.
Another eight portals are under further development - Regional Australians, Immigration, Seniors, Environment, Indigenous, Women, Communities, and Law and Justice.
The provision of online Government information and services, and the development of an increasing number of online transactional services - across Federal, State and Local Government - are promoting industry development and training in ICT industries.
The Internet remains the sole part of the mass-media in which content is not yet controlled by a handful of powerful corporations; proposals which will help maintain this independence have our general support. Increased support for local content industries, and enhanced protection against globalised intellectual property interests is a key part of the Greens Arts policy.
The Greens support a more open and competitive content industry in all aspects of broadcasting, including broadband internet. We would not oppose carefully targetted incentives to content creators (either direct, or via the taxation system) if these were identified as needed.
