Membership Consultation Process

Model for the formation of policy statements, press releases, responses to requests, or position statements from ISOC-AU:

  1. The Directors (or members) identify an issue requiring attention, or are notified that a response or statement would be appropriate.

  2. Members will be informed as soon as possible of the issue and time constraints via iamems list, and anyone wishing to participate in developing a draft will be invited to do so. If enough people wish to participate, and the time constraints permit, a mailing list for the issue will be established.

  3. The Directors and other participants discuss the issue taking into consideration any immediate iamems feedback and formulate a draft response, which will be distributed to iamems.

  4. Members will be asked for responses or comments on the draft. Substantive changes will be incorporated into a final draft by the Directors and other participants.

  5. The integrated outcome of the original proposal and members feedback will be re-presented to the members as the ISOC-AU position/outcome on the issue.

  6. The Directors will formally ratify the final draft at the next Directors meeting, prior to release if time permitting, after release if not.

  7. The final draft will be released as the official ISOC-AU position. A copy of all position statements and other policy documents will be kept on the Web.
There will be circumstances in which this "normal" cycle of proposition and feedback will be impractical due to externally imposed time constraints, or other factors. In such a situation, the Directors will make a response that they feel is appropriate, but will also ensure that members are informed in a timely manner of the issue, the action that was taken, and the likely outcome.
