Internet Society of Australia (ISOC-AU) Media Release 2002/01
The Internet is for Everyone!
Canberra, 06 May 2002 - The Internet Society of Australia supports the Australian Government inquiry into wireless broadband technologies.
ISOC-AU today responded to the inquiry's terms of reference, offering assistance to the Standing Committee on Communications, Information Technology and the Arts, which is conducting the inquiry.
ISOC-AU expressed that a balanced and knowledgeable understanding is vital, of wireless broadband technologies, their benefits, surrounding issues, and broadcast-related regulations. Effective growth of wireless broadband is seen by the Society as important to increasing the future utility and ubiquity of the Internet.
The inquiry will report on the current and potential use of wireless technologies (including wireless LAN, 3G, Bluetooth, LMDS and Wireless Local Loop) to provide broadband communications in Australia. A report is expected before the end of the year for consideration by the Broadband Advisory Group (BAG), complementing its work in the broadband area.
ISOC-AU will be preparing further information in consultation with its Members for submission to the Standing Committee. The Society looks forward to assisting the Australian Government in these efforts.
