The Internet Society of Australia Applauds NOIE's funding of
auDA's Name Policy and Competition Panels
Tomorrow is the historic first meeting of the auDA Names Panel and the
Internet Society of Australia ('ISOC-AU') has welcomed Minister Alston's
decision to provide funding for auDA Limited to facilitate this
process.
The funding has allowed auDA to more forward more quickly with support
for operation and administration of both its Public Policy Panels:
· .au second level domain names allocation and administration policy
('Names Panel')
· .au second level domain names competition policy
('Competition Panel')
ISOC-AU President, Dr Kate Lance, commented that "some limitations and
inconsistencies in domain name policy have been of concern to domain
name holders in the .au name space for some time.
"The introduction of competition is also essential to effective
allocation of domain names", she said.
"Many Australian Internet users will be well pleased to hear of the
Government's support."
Executive Director, Mr Tony Hill, has been appointed to membership of
the Names Panel and will be nominated for membership of the Competition
Panel.
"It is vital that the work of the panels is commenced as soon as
possible to allow open discussions of concerns about allocation of
domain names and allow the introduction of competition as soon as
reasonably possible", Mr Hill said.
He went on to express ISOC-AU's support for auDA's achievement in
establishment of these Panels saying that "the significant Internet
Community response to the auDA call for participation attests to a need
for these Panels."
"ISOC-AU is pleased with the very broad industry and community
representation that has been chosen to participate in both these panels.
"Involvement of such a wide range of stakeholders will lead to outcomes
that have wide support throughout the Internet community which is great
news for users of domain names, and for the Internet in Australia."
"I would also like to counter some of the criticisms that have been
levelled against auDA for being too slow", Mr Hill said.
"This is the third attempt at getting domain names right in Australia.
"With such a wide range of stakeholders, any attempt to rush the process
would lead to limitations on consultation, confusion and potential
disaster.
"auDA has been established with a charter to ensure that the integrity
of the domain name system is preserved, and we support their approach to
getting the system right," he said.
