ISOC-AU SEEKS USER BENEFITS FROM RE-DELEGATION

NEWS RELEASE

Internet Society of Australia (ISOC-AU)	2001/08
The Internet is for Everyone!

3 September 2001

'ISOC-AU will be looking for substantial user benefits following ICANN
support for transfer of the delegation for dot-au to .au Domain
Administration', said Mr Tony Hill, Executive Director of the Internet
Society of Australia.

Transfer of delegation will clear the way for key initiatives in the
supply of dot-au domain names, including:

- competition among domain name providers
- consistent policies among various second level domains such as
  .com.au and .org.au
- new dispute resolution arrangements
- introduction of new second level domains

'Australian individuals and businesses should be able to use dot-au as
their unique basis for participation in the global Internet.

'Under these policies we will be looking for improved access to .id.au
for individuals and more competitive access to .com.au and potentially
new second level domains for businesses.

'auDA has established processes for stable Internet self regulation with
significant transparency that justify ICANN's decision to support
transfer of the delegation to auDA and not to the Australian government
as some have suggested', Mr Hill said.

'ISOC-AU has played a key role in establishment of the new regime by its
consistent and active role in the establishment of auDA, the auDA board
and the auDA Names and Competition Panels.

'The role of ISOC-AU has been critical in ensuring transparency and
sound policy development by providing a voice for users and an
independent viewpoint with a sound technical understanding.

'auDA should proceed expeditiously to complete the IANA requirements for
transferring delegation of .au so that implementation of the new
policies and competition can proceed in parallel as soon as possible.

'Transparency and accountability have been key features of the policy
development process that have allowed the significant progress to date
and we will look for this approach to continue in the implementation
phase.
