Tenth Anniversary of ISOC-AU

line

It has now been ten eventful years since the Internet Society of Australia was formed, on 27 November 1996 - see the photos and minutes of the Inaugural General Meeting.

Below are congratulations to our members, and to President Tony Hill and Vice-President Narelle Clark, on our milestone from friends and colleagues in many other Internet Society chapters around the world. What a wealth of international goodwill!

Thank you everyone -
the Board of ISOC-AU

Dear Tony and members of the ISOC Australia Chapter,

It is with great pleasure that ISOC congratulates you on the occasion of your 10th anniversary.

Over the past ten years, the Australian chapter has distinguished itself within the ISOC community. In particular, your chapter has successfully sought to foster a better understanding of the Internet and to participate in the improvement and extension of the Internet for Australians and the world. The work you have done has added significantly to the Internet's development and to ISOC's global mission to promote the open development, evolution, and use of the Internet for the benefit of all people throughout the world.

Congratulations and best wishes for continued success!
Warm regards,

Lynn St.Amour
President & CEO
Internet Society

On behalf of the Pacific Islands Chapter of the Internet Society, I extend our warmest wishes to ISOC-AU in reaching its tenth year anniversay. The reach and scope of the Internet in 1996 and what it is today are vastly different, yet it continues to bind and bring us all closer together in ever-increasing ways. As part of the global ISOC community we look forward to continue supporting this Internet evolution and working together with you and colleagues from around the world to ensure the Internet is truly free, open, secure and accessible for everyone.

Best wishes for the successful first decade, and here's looking to many more of the same.

10 years! Wow! As if it was yesterday, hm? Here's the official note on that:

ISOC-Bulgaria sends our warmest and cordial greetings to Tony Hill, to ISOC-Australia, and to all Internauts in Australia.

10 year is not just a decade, it's a whole century in the Internet. You are lucky to have been among the Internet pioneers of your country, and that's a very important moment in your lives, as well as it's important for the development of the Internet.

We wish you good luck, many more decades on the Internet, and all the best that your brothers and sisters from Bulgaria could think of!

Serve as an example to other chapters, but more importantly - do things that will make you proud of the time you've spent for ISOC-Australia, with ISOC-Australia. We wish you to be among the leaders of the Internet revolution! You can always count on us - regardless of time zone differences and distance. Because thanks to the Internet we, the ISOC, never sleep. And may "the sun never set on the Internet Society".

On a more personal note - I am happy to know a number of people from ISOC-Australia, and I've noticed that each and every one of them is an exceptional person. I wish them all, as well as all other chapter members, good luck in whatever good you do for the Internet community in Australia and worldwide.

Yours sincerely,
Veni Markovski
President and Chairman of the Board, Internet Society - Bulgaria
Member of the Board of Trustees, ISOC, elected by chapters

Congratulations to Narelle and all ISOC-AU members!

You pipped us poms to the Chapter post by two and three years (ISOC Scotland and England respectively!) and have lead many an interesting activity for the better good of the Internet in general and Australians in particular.

I very much look forward to raising a glass to you all in celebration at a job well done and I hope and expect many more firsts from you guys over the next ten years. At least this will be something to help you forget the Ashes - are coming home (to England) again... Well you can't expect every Englishman to flake out with the stress of enjoying Aussie hospitality!

Whatever happens at the crease I know I will first hear it on the Internet and that is just one example of how much closer we all are due to the Internet than we were ten years ago. That has to be a wonderful thing for that special friendship between Aussies and Poms over the next ten years and beyond.

Have a great IPv6 barbie!

founder Chair emeritus ISOC England/UK
vice-chair IPv6 TaskForce UK.

Thank you Narelle for the information and congratulations!

To ISOC-AU members,

Your organisation has reached a milestone, 10 years to the service of the development of the Internet in Australia and its neighbors. I recall when Tony Hill came to represent the Australian Chapter and the Internet Society to the ICT meeting of Noumea in 2001 helping to set the direction for the Pacific Islands in ICT policy and planning. More recently we exchanged views at the Chapters meeting during ICANN Wellington this year.

I know that the Internet Society would not be here today without the support of its members and especially its chapters like yours.

Franck Martin
Vice Chairman Pacific Islands Chapter of the Internet Society
Member of the Internet Society Board of Trustees

Congrats from ISOC Quebec, and please say hello to Tony for me.

We would also send our best wishes from Hong Kong and I hope we can get to know your chapter better. As a relatively new chapter here in Hong Kong, we have all the things to learn from your organization!

Congratulations again and another many ten-years of good work for ISOC-AU!

Charles Mok
Chairman
ISOC HK

It gives us great joy to send to you our warmest wishes as you mark the 10-year anniversary of ISOC-Australia. Evidently, your achievements have been make possible by the visionary, collective, and untiring dedication of your members; noted through your 27 November, 1996 minutes.

Founded on a visible committed to provide access to the countryside, outreach to the majority, non-technical users, the disadvantaged, and protection of children; shielded by a pro-active aggressive defence of the Internet from all forms of institutionalised control, indeed your chapter is firmly built on the ISOC vision and champions the individual's right to communicate.

In so many respects, your founders' vision ten years ago represents our formation committee aspirations in Kenya today which simply reminds us of TCP/IP's knowledge sharing power. On a personal note, Australia was my first foreign country to visit in 1989 as a student on Exchange Program thus I hold fond memories of Brisbane and Sydney from the kind people that welcomed me.

We all wish you a more prosperous next 10, happy holidays, and many more Internet users in the years ahead.

Sincerely,
Alex Gakuru, Chair
ISOC Chapter Formation Committee - Kenya

ISOC-Palestine would like to wish you a happy 10th anniversary and best wishes for many years to come. Although we did not have any bilateral cooperation in the past, I sure do hope that we will in the near future. Regards,

Rami Wihaidi
Vice-Chairman
ISOC-Palestine

I wish to congratulate you and all the members of the chapters on your 10th anniversary, I had the great chance to meet many of you during the ICANN meeting in 2001.

Good luck with the IPv6 Summit, I am currently involved in some of those activities in the Latin American region and certainly, IPv6 is the next challenge for all of us.

ISOC Geneva Chapter VP

Dear ISOC-AU Chapter colleagues, this is a message from ISOC Hungary, another "old" chapter of the Internet Society. Let us wish you another n*10 years of successful existence, for the benefit of the Australian Internet users - many of them being Hungarians by origin and mostly having arrived at Australia just 50 years ago after the 1956 revolution.

Let us celebrate the anniversary of your chapter together with you by expressing our belief that the Internet is remaining a mean of bringing people together and providing a tool for fruitful contacts all over the world, independently of geographical distance.

All the best from Budapest,
Peter Bakonyi, President, and
Lajos Balint, Executive Director,
ISOC Hungary Chapter

Dear Narelle (et al)

The French chapter is happy to participate in the celebration, from the other side of the globe, but so close, thanks to electronic communication! Just a year ago, our president, Sebastien Bachollet was able to travel to Australia and meet with chapter members, and he definitely appreciated the atmosphere and enthousiasm of the attendees.

On his behalf (he is far away from a computer for the whole week), I wish to congratulate the Australian chapter on its tenth anniversary, that allows it to join the new club of the "teenchapters" (10 years and over) to which we also belong now. Enjoy the celebration - wish we could send some good champagne over the Internet!

Odile Ambry

I've been in contact with ISOC-Au for several years now, and was witness to your warm welcoming and excellent organization for the ICANN meeting in Melbourne.

During this time it has been a pleasure, and a cause of respect, to interact with ISOC-Au, for the value of its initiatives, the depth and breadth of your approach to the Internet, and the smart and lively exchanges. Congratulations on your Tenth and wishes for a long, successful future.

Yours,
Alejandro Pisanty
ISOC Mexico

ISOC.DE, the German Chapter of ISOC would like to send our warmest congratulations to ISOC-AU's 10th anniversary. Please continue the good work to promote the Internet and support the users in your constituency and, of course, globally. Just out of historic curiosity it turns out that ISOC.DE was recognized as an ISOC Chapter in 1996 as well, and your IGM almost coincided with our then annual Internet conference.

Kind regards,
Peter Koch (for the ISOC.DE Board)

Congratulations to all at the Australian Chapter of the Internet Society from the Washington, DC Chapter of ISOC.

Browsing back in time through your web site, I see a remarkably productive and professional decade. In fact, from reviewing your past teleconference directors meetings, your Articles of Association and Memorandum of Association, and the documents you have published, and I expect to make some recommendations for our Washington DC USA ISOC chapter based on what I learned from you. I see you are searching for an ISOC-AU Executive Director. Impressive!

VP, Washington DC USA Chapter of ISOC
